A Couple of Camp Folks
Camp Folks was started by Julia Hix (that’s me!) and Aaron Ruddell as a way to get more people to experience the natural beauty and adventure of the outdoors. Having grown up in Tallahassee and Thomasville, Aaron and I spent our childhoods exploring the area’s parks, forests, trails, waterways, and beaches. The natural beauty of the Forgotten Coast brought us back to Tallahassee and discovering its hidden outdoor gems is our passion.
We created the concept of Camp Folks during our short weekend trips to St. George Island, Ginnie Springs, Cape San Blas, and others. We were shocked by how few people were taking advantage of the spectacular outdoor resources we have at our disposal, and were disappointed when we heard “there’s nothing to do in Tallahassee” from friends and family. We were also bummed about the amount of trash at campsites, and vowed to do something to help clean it up. It occurred to us then that Tallahassee needed a resource to help regular folks discover, enjoy, and protect the great outdoors.
To do that, we knew we would have to simplify the planning and execution of outdoor adventure. That’s where Camp Folks comes in. No gear? No plan? No ride? No problemo! We take care of all that and more, so you can have an amazing adventure!
Our excursions feature locations that are off the beaten track, that have been thoroughly researched to ensure that the sites met our expectations for a good time. You can be sure that we have visited every location to verify its legitimacy before sending you out, so you know what to expect when you arrive. We handle the permitting and reservations for campsites, making sure that the best campsite available is reserved for you in advance. Our 12 passenger van takes the hassle out of driving and transportation logistics, so you can sit back and enjoy the incredible views along the way.
Additionally, Camp Folks offers outdoor gear for rent at affordable prices. Quality outdoor gear is expensive and can add up quickly, and purchasing the wrong gear can impact your comfort, safety, and enjoyment. That’s why we only offer high quality gear from well-known manufacturers. You’ll find brands like ENO, Marmot, The North Face, Kelty, Osprey, and more in our rental inventory. As a bonus, when you book a Camp Folks’ excursion, you get 50% off all rental gear. If you have your own gear, that’s awesome! You’re welcome to bring it too!
As for cleaning up campsites? Each camper is given a trash bag and encouraged to clean up the site before and after their stay. We’ve partnered with Leave No Trace to help teach the community about how to leave our parks, forests, and protected lands better than the state we found them in. Each of our excursions comes with an Adventure 101 session, where we reinforce the 7 Leave No Trace Principles.
It takes more than just a couple people to get Tallahassee outdoors, it takes an entire community. That’s why we partner with local outdoor outfitters, eco-tour providers, farms and vineyards, and campgrounds to help facilitate our excursions. We also support non-profit organizations that are dedicated to bringing the outdoors to the community and providing outdoor education. If you have a business or organization that is focused on outdoor adventure, let us know!
